May hikes the Overland Track

By May Pantad

No challenge too hard

As some of you may know, in September 2025, I was involved in an accident which resulted in a fractured nose, eye socket and permanent vision impairment to my left eye.

I was lucky to receive excellent care in major Australian cities, which has helped me with my physical recovery. Over time I have slowly adjusted to life with one good eye, forgoing sports I had previously loved playing as the reduced depth perception made it both physically and emotionally challenging, and now focussing on new hobbies and sports that help fulfil me and grow.

As I continue to manage the ongoing trauma of the accident and navigate rebuilding my identity, I want to take a moment to shift focus and raise awareness to support the prevention and treatment of eye disease, in particular in rural and remote communities.

In December I will be hiking the Overland Track in Tasmania over 6 days with my friend Lauren, and through this raise awareness to support the work of the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Fred Hollows had a dream of a world where nobody needs to be needlessly blind.

Together we can work towards that goal. Today 9 out of 10 blind people don't need to be and a small operation costing as little as $25 can help restore their sight.

Thank you for making a difference
