Handy's Marathon Fundraiser
At the start of the year and a massive reality check, I was given the ultimatum - put my family first or continue partying and lose everything. In my mind, the most effective way to improve my relationship and become the family man I needed to be, was to focus on my mental health and improving my physical well-being. What better way to do this than set what I thought was an impossible goal? Run a full marathon. Not only did this give me a goal to achieve, but I hoped it was something that could make my family proud. Something to show my kids that if you set your mind to something, no matter how impossible it may seem, it can be achieved.
At the start of this year I had never ran 5km in my life and hitting the scales in January at 107kg. I signed up to The Great Ocean Road half marathon and set my sights on achieving my goal. A day later I had my first set back, I broke my foot. But I was determined not to let this stop me. I made a promise to myself that I won’t let this get in my way so I changed my diet and found other methods of getting fit including swimming where I was actually lapped by a pregnant woman LOL but I pushed on with a goal to be lighter on my feet when I could start running again. Then came my next set back, which like many hit me like a ton of bricks. Corona virus stopped me in my tracks. The marathon was cancelled, I lost my source of income and everything seemed hopeless. But I still soldiered on. There were many ups and downs, a few relapses into my old ways, but I pulled through.
Now we’re in November and I’ve been on a steady training regime since the start of the year I’ve decided it was time to step it up and notch and have decided to run the distance of a full marathon rather than the half marathon (Also with a little bit of pushing from Mike Toner) with the hope that this extra effort will entice my peers to contribute to the cause :)
I will raise money for The Fred Hollows Foundation because they help train and empower local eye doctors, nurses and health workers and create a sustainable system of care in the communities that need our help the most.
Over 25 million people are needlessly blind on this planet but a simple procedure costing as little as $25 in most developing countries can restore their sight and change their lives for ever! Their work has a very clear purpose: to make sure everyone, whether they’re rich or poor, has access to high quality, affordable eye health as we enjoy right here in this cou
