Making a difference
Next Sunday 5th May 2024, I will be competing in the Australian Ironman Triathlon at Port Macquarie to raise funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation. 18 years ago, when I did my last Ironman (UK), I remember kids cheering on their exhausted Mum's or Dad's who were taking part, and I promised myself that I would do another one when I had my own kids. Well, here I am, with a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.2km (marathon) run ahead of me, and my own kids in tow, hoping to raise money to prevent avoidable blindness.
Fred Hollows had a dream of a world where nobody needs to be needlessly blind. When someone's sight is restored, it gives people the chance for a better life. It gives people independence, they're able to work, go to school and provide for their families. Ending avoidable blindness through medication, surgery, education, prevention and training is a part of helping people out of poverty, which we see proof of everyday. The Fred Hollows Foundation now works in more than 25 countries and has restored sight to over three million people worldwide. This couldn’t have been achieved without the overwhelming support of the Australian public. We’re as determined now as ever to end avoidable blindness. 9 out of 10 people who are blind don't need to be – there remains so much to do.
I know it is a hard time for many at the moment in many ways, and so please only contribute if you can, but every dollar raised will help many in need.
