Hi, my name’s Alexander Campbell and in February 2023 I’ll be embarking on a 4 year journey to walk around the world, beginning and ending in my hometown of Sydney. My intended route will see me walk roughly 40,000km, across 30 countries and 4 continents.
During my world walk, I’ll be raising money for The Fred Hollows Foundation to help their mission to end avoidable blindness. The Foundation operates in more than 25 countries, including many that I’ll pass through on my walk. By supporting the Foundation, I hope to give back to the people and communities I’ll meet on my journey, and repay the kindness and hospitality I’m sure I’ll encounter.
There are currently 43 million people in the world living with blindness and 295 million people with moderate to severe vision impairment. However, at least 9 out 10 people who are blind don't need to be. Eye diseases like cataract, trachoma and diabetic retinopathy often lead to blindness, despite these conditions being either treatable or preventable.
The Fred Hollows Foundation works to solve this by strengthening health systems and working with communities to improve their own eye health. They provide life-changing eye surgeries and treatments, train doctors and health workers, develop and introduce new technology, and build and upgrade facilities. So far, the Foundation has restored sight to more than 3 million people worldwide.
Access to quality eye care is one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to help break the cycle of poverty. Restoring sight allows people to regain their independence, attend school or return to work, and support themselves and their family.
In some countries, it costs as little as $25 to perform cataract surgery and restore sight to someone living with avoidable blindness.
